Exclusive: Ghosts gets its notice
Not a massive surprise following the rather scathing tone of its reviews, but I've been told the cast and crew of Ghosts have just had their three weeks notice. The Ibsen play, which was originally due to run until May at the Duchess Theatre, and which stars Iain Glen and Harry Treadaway amongst others, has been plagued by relentless negativity on theatre boards like Whatsonstage and a swathe of negative reviews. It hasn't managed to pull in the crowds - and with its dark tone, perhaps theatregoers are just looking for something a little more chirpy. I thought about going, but like many others, I think I would have preferred a night out at Legally Blonde!

That's a shame - I certainly had more fun at Legally Blonde, but the second half of Ghosts was really gripping, and Sharpe and Treadaway were both wonderful to watch. Iain Glen's accent probably nailed the lid on its coffin though - you wanted to go home and watch re-runs of Gordon Jackson in 'Upstairs, Downstairs' to get more of it.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really hard play and I think it's really a bit of a chestnut that the producing company shouldn't have invested in. While there are some modern parallels with Aids and the rise of the religious right, and a timeless thread of social hypocrisy, overall it's just dated, dated, dated in a way a good cast can't save. I think I would have preferred "The Crucible" - this text should be saved for college reading lists and amateur revivals.
ReplyDeleteJohnny - I have seen Ghosts before and didn't enjoy it, and with the bad reviews and my knowledge of the production in general, I just couldn't face it!
ReplyDeleteWebcowgirl - I think it's an odd choice for a West End play, and I think you're right, it's a bit of a period piece. I'm not sure why they thought it was ever going to pull in massive crowds - a Treadaway and a Sharp are not enough in these days of Rylance and Cattrall!
